Contemporary Realism
If contemporary creativity benefits from extensive archives campiling centuries ofwidely diverse artistic proposals, it also inherits the challenge of reinventing déjà vu. The bar is raised even higher by the multiplied avenues of artworks dissemination. How to express himself differently, in a way that has never been done before, has been joe Marshal Foster’s motivation from the outset. Without ever negating the past, his approach consists in absorbing parts of the culture that shapes a person’s way of life while striving to find unexplored avenues that correlate his profoundly personal vision of the world. In his opinion, an artist’s work will stand out only if he adopts a pictoriallanguage that reveals his uniqueness and authenticity.
“Art has existed for such a long time, it is the cultures revol ving around it that change. Since everything has already been done, an artist must find a way to express what’s already known with surprising originality.” To honour his grandfather, an exceptional man in his eyes from whom he draws his middle name, he chooses Marshal as his signature.

A great number of art lovers toy with the project of opening a gallery. There is however, between dream and reality, a large gap to be conquered which is not everyone’s cup of tea.
This mix of culture and business sense is rather rarely found, but when it does present itself, the sustainability of the project is foreseeable. Such is the case for Galerie Céleste, owned by an artist with a high degree of business sensitivity; fourteen years of existence and solid growth as undeniable proof.

As the art world moved from representational to abstract, no small part of the intellectual motivation for this development came from the realization that colour provided a much larger design element than previously thought.
This can be vividly seen in Marvels and Mirages of Orientalism: From Spain to Morocco, Benjamin Constant in his time which runs at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts from January 31, 2015 to May 31, 2015.
Benjamin Constant lived from 1845 to 1902 and was well known and successful in his time. His work was influenced by the Moorish palaces of Spain and Morocco. His ability as a colourist is remarkable and it is to that use of rich colours that I have alluded to above.

Michel Soulières has a passion for painting. A need that must absolutely be filled, an irresistible obsession, almost a compulsion! In his sleep, he dreams about the joys of painting. Early in the morning, before making breakfast for his children, he tries to capture the images that came to him during the night. Otherwise, his creative élan must be relegated to the weekends and any other free moments when he is not working as a house painter, a job that helps provide for daily necessities and at which he excels notably when marble and granite faux finishes are involved. The latter, needlessto- say, he mostly performs in prestigious locations and on a large scale.
